T1 Line - What are the features and benefits of using a T1 line?

What is Line T1?

T1 line is a type of telephone service capable of transporting data equivalent to 24 conventional telephone lines, using only 2 pairs of wires. You are familiar with a normal line from the phone company that is delivered on a pair of copper wires, which transmit your voice as an analog signal. When you use a normal modem on a line like this, it can transmit data at perhaps 30 kilobits per second (30,000 bits per second). If you have a T1 line, it means that the phone company has brought a fiber optic line. A T1 line can carry data at a rate of 1.544 megabits per second, roughly 60 times more data than a normal residential modem.

How Does T1 Line Work?

A T1 line looks like a plastic box on the wall. You plug into it at each end with a wide modular plug and equipment called multiplexers or channel banks convert the T1 digital line into 24 or 48 individual telephone lines or high-speed data channels. If the T1 line is being used for telephone conversations, it plugs into the phone system. If it is carrying data it plugs into the network's router.

What Are The Applications of Line T1?

There are three main applications of T1 line:

  1. Substitute to Local DID trunks: Your local DID trunks can easily be replaced by T1 service from your telephone company. In most areas a 24 line T1 is about the same cost as 12 DID trunks. Try our T1 Line Quote Tool for the best rates and vendors.
  2. Long Distance Carrier Dedicated Service: T1 line can also be purchased from AT&T, MCI, Sprint, Cognigen or other long distance carriers as a dedicated connection for taking 800/888 toll free calls and making outbound long distance calls. This service is provided at highly discounted rates on T-1 lines and can save a great deal of money
  3. Point-to-point connection between offices: T1 line can also be used to connect lines between two locations. For example, a T-1 circuit can be used to provide 24 off premise extensions of lines ringing at a remote location. Because T-1 is only one circuit, the mileage fees are significantly less than the mileage fees on 24 individual lines.

Benefits Of Using Line T1

There are many benefits of using T1 lines in your office, some of which I have listed below:

  1. Choice: Since more and more companies are using T1 lines, it's easy to find a great price for the service you need. Several companies like Cognigen will even offer you a free quote when you shop online for the service.
  2. Cost Cutting: T1 lines are a boon to businesses because they can cut costs. You are using one T1 line instead of 24 normal ones, meaning a huge amount of money you can use elsewhere.
  3. Reliability: Another advantage is that T-1 is a digital transmission and is less prone to loss and interference than regular phone lines. Even when used for Internet access, a T1 line is much more reliable than an analog modem. Depending on the work, a T1 line can generally handle quite a few people. For general browsing, hundreds of users are easily able to share a T1 line comfortably.

Dedicated T1 Line Quote - Price/Cost

A T1 line might cost between $1,000 and $1,500 per month depending the provider and location of user. The other end of the T1 line needs to be connected to an ISP and the total cost is a combination of the fee the phone company charges and the fee the ISP charges.
